Subject Aspirations:

English Including Oracy

• Extend and develop the knowledge of language children bring from home by providing a wide range of linguistic experiences.
• Children will be effective, competent communicators and good listeners.
• Children express opinions, articulate feelings and formulate responses to a range of texts both narrative and non-fiction using appropriate vocabulary.
• Ensure that all children can read easily, fluently and with good understanding and develop the habit of reading widely and often, both for pleasure and information.
• Ensure that all children acquire a wide vocabulary, a thorough understanding of grammar, punctuation and spelling together with a knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.
• Ensure that all children write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in a range of contexts, genres and audiences.
• Increase the children’s ability to use planning, drafting and editing to improve their work.
• Develop every child’s understanding of the spoken word and their capacity to express themselves effectively in a variety of speaking and listening activities, matching style and response to audience and purpose.
• Ensure that all children use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas.
• Provide high quality literacy experiences outside designated English lessons, throughout the broader curriculum.
• Children produce effective, well-presented written work across the Curriculum. 

Maths

• For children to develop their mental recall and fluency to enable them to apply their knowledge to a variety of concepts
• To develop children’s confidence in maths, promoting resilience to conquer new challenges
• To develop children’s vocabulary to engage in mathematical talk, working collaboratively with others
• To be able to apply knowledge to solve problems and mathematically reason
• Making mathematical links between topics and other curriculum subjects
• Linking maths to real life problems, helping them to develop skills for the future

Science

History

• Instil in the children a curiosity and understanding of events, places and people in a variety of times and environments.
• Children develop an interest in the past and an appreciation of human achievements and aspirations.
• Children understand the values of our society.
• Children learn about the major issues and events in the history of our own country and of the world and how these events may have influenced one another.
• Children develop a knowledge of chronology within which the children can organise their understanding of the past.
• Children understand how the past was different from the present and that people of other times and places may have had different values and attitudes from ours.
• Children understand the nature of evidence through the process of enquiry and by developing the range of skills required to interpret primary and secondary source materials.
• Children distinguish between historical facts and the interpretation of those facts.
• Children understand that events have a multiplicity of causes and that historical explanation is provisional, debatable and sometimes controversial.

Geography

• Stimulate the children’s interest in their own surroundings and other localities, both in the United Kingdom and the rest of the world.
• Give children the opportunities to make observations and to form opinions about their immediate environment and other localities.
• Children understand how physical features such as climate, rivers, and volcanoes affect the lifestyles of different peoples throughout the world.
